The Stiftung Warentest has examined 21 types of gingerbread: discounter gingerbreads showed lower levels of acrylamide.
For several years now, the acrylamide contamination in gingerbread has been a widely discussed topic at Christmas time. Because spicy gingerbreads from chocolate gingerbread to printen, Nuremberg wafer or Elisen gingerbread are an integral part of the pre-Christmas season.
The Stiftung Warentest therefore examined 21 gingerbreads, including 13 brown gingerbreads covered with chocolate, five Nuremberg wafer gingerbreads and three Elisen gingerbreads (all unfilled). According to the Stiftung Warentest, the result is quite positive. Thirteen products received the grade “good”, six the grade “satisfactory” and only two were rated “sufficient”. However, the "Winter Dream Gingerbread" from Aldi (South) only achieved an adequate rating. “Smells and tastes very spicy, but one-sidedly dominant of cinnamon. Moist in the mouth, slightly sticky and slightly scratchy, ”stated the testers of the Stiftung Warentest. The “Fürstenschnitte” from Bahlsen with the grade “good” was the test winner for the Elisen gingerbread. The "Gold Elisen" from Wicklein received only a "satisfactory", the Nuremberg Elisen gingerbread from Haeberlein-Metzger was only "sufficient". Which manufacturers are behind the gingerbread of the discounters is still a well kept secret.
