More and more men are having cosmetic surgery

Full hair, firm skin, well-trained body: not least because of ideal societal images, men place increasing value on the quality of their bodies. Cosmetic surgery has long been used not only by women, but also more men can remove wrinkles, lift the face or even enlarge the penis. The most common way to have body fat removed is men, as the German Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery said at a presentation of current study data on Wednesday in Berlin. But do such interventions actually increase self-esteem?

The trend towards cosmetic surgery is still going on. What is new is that more and more men are laying under the knife to have smaller and larger non-medically necessary corrections carried out. Not only liposuction is carried out, but also more operations in the genital area. "Penis enlargements are now in 7th place among men for cosmetic surgery," said the President of the German Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Dr. Sven von Saldern. The association was surprised by this development. "The intervention is purely aesthetic," said von Saldern.

This was the result of a survey study among 1,100 patients. The top position in men is to suck off the fat. On the other hand, women are most likely to have their breasts enlarged (29 percent). Women are also increasingly being operated on in the genital area. Although this somewhat new type of cosmetic surgery does not land on the top ranks in the survey, a significant increase can be observed. The chairman explains this fact with the significant increase in shaving in the genital area. "It must also have something to do with the trend towards intimate shaving," said the doctor. In contrast to male patients, women often have the operation performed due to functional symptoms. The interventions can often alleviate or alleviate pain and other complaints. “With men there is only the desire for more volume. A particularly psychologically sensitive topic, because the high expectations cannot always be met, ”warns the expert. Because such interventions can neither increase potency nor general attractiveness. In the association's opinion, this is also a highly sensitive topic, because "the high expectations cannot always be met." The surgeon does not believe that the results of the study show that there is a uniform trend "that is widespread." A few years ago there was hardly any talk about this topic, but today it is different. Accordingly, it may be that more men openly commit to such alleged corrections.

According to the evaluation of the survey, injections and wrinkle filling materials (fillers) for wrinkle correction are very popular among women and men. However, the study was only carried out among patients who had already had an operation. There are no actual figures on how many cosmetic operations have been undertaken in Germany. According to the association, however, the total number of surgeries is increasing again after “certain fluctuations in the past few years,” said von Saldern. This is contrasted by a representative survey by GfK Marktforschung. Over 70 percent of the women surveyed said that they would "under no circumstances" resort to surgical wrinkle correction. Only about 2.1 percent of the survey participants stated that they had already undergone cosmetic surgery to smooth wrinkles. And only 1.1 percent have had botox injections for wrinkle therapy. A majority, on the other hand, focus on sport, healthy eating and a positive lifestyle. (sb)
